Port guide

Belize City cruise port guide

Belize City is a tender port: ships anchor offshore because the water is too shallow to dock, and small boats run passengers to the Fort Street Tourism Village on North Front Street. Allow roughly 15 to 25 minutes on the water, plus queueing, which is why early tours board tenders first. The tourism village has shops, bars, ATMs and tour-operator stands, and it is the safest and most useful part of town for a cruise day. Almost nobody stays in the city itself. The standard day is a half-day trip out: Altun Ha ruins and Belize Zoo by road (about an hour each way), cave tubing at Nohoch Che'en (about 60 to 75 minutes), a snorkel and beach stop at Goff's Caye, or a water taxi to Caye Caulker. Lamanai and San Pedro are long days that leave little margin for a tender delay. Belize City has serious gang violence, concentrated on the Southside south of Haulover Creek, and the US State Department has an advisory against travel to that area, so stay on the north side and use organized transport. Norwegian ships use Harvest Caye in the far south instead, which is a different port. Belize's wet season is June to November and October is the wettest month.

What Belize City is good for

  • Culture & history (31 tours)
Altun Ha (about 1 hour) and Lamanai (long day with a river trip) are the main Maya ruin choices.
  • Adventure (44 tours)
Cave tubing at Nohoch Che'en is the headline adventure, often paired with zip lines or Maya ruins.
  • Wildlife & nature (16 tours)
Belize Zoo, the Community Baboon Sanctuary and river wildlife boat rides.
  • Snorkeling (1 tour)
Goff's Caye on the barrier reef, and Caye Caulker or Hol Chan for sharks and rays.
  • Beaches
Old Belize's Kukumba Beach and Goff's Caye; the mainland coast has little natural beach.

On your own or a cruise-line tour?

The port zone is easy on your own for the tourism village, a short taxi to Old Belize, or a water taxi to Caye Caulker. Altun Ha and the zoo are workable with a hired driver, but you are one slow tender away from trouble, so agree a fixed price and a return time. Cave tubing, Lamanai and Goff's Caye are better booked through the ship or a well-reviewed local operator, because boat or river timing and jungle roads leave little margin. Because Belize City is a tender port, ship-sponsored tours board tenders first and are the safest choice for long trips. Do not rely on the public bus or wander the south side for sightseeing.

How people miss the ship here

  • Tender queues back to the ship are longest between 3:00 and 5:00 pm. Aim to be back at the Tourism Village 90 minutes before departure, or up to 2 hours if you went to Caye Caulker.
  • Lamanai involves a long drive plus a river boat and is the most time-sensitive tour; only ship-guaranteed trips are protected if it overruns.
  • Water taxi schedules are published as an image (San Pedro Belize Express, labelled 2025) and ferries are about hourly, so a missed ferry can cost an hour or more.
  • If you miss the last tender, a private boat to the ship can cost US$400 or more, if the ship can still be reached. Call the ship's port agent at once.
  • Heavy rain (October is the wettest month) can delay road tours and tenders.

Where ships dock and getting around

Fort Street Tourism Village (tender landing)

Tender landing Walkable to town

Four tender docks converge on one pier. A guide reports the four areas are named REEF, JAGUAR, MAYA and PIRATE, so note which one you land at. The village has 30+ gift shops and stands, a duty-free shop, four restaurants, three bars, a MOHO chocolate shop, several ATMs (BZ$ and US$), a security office with tourism kiosk and customs desk, free passport stamps, tour-operator stands, shaded waiting areas, accessible restrooms and free, patchy Wi-Fi. Wikivoyage notes it is only open when a ship is in town.

Getting to town: The village is on North Front Street. Walk west along North Front Street to the Swing Bridge; the water-taxi terminals are near the bridge.

Usually used by: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and MSC. Norwegian uses its private Harvest Caye, a different port further south.

Taxi

Licensed taxis have green plates, are not metered and have no mandated flat rates, so agree the fare before getting in. Taxi stands are at the Tourism Village and the airport. Guides disagree on city fares, so treat figures as rough.

Water taxi (Caye Caulker / San Pedro)

Water taxis leave from the Marine Terminal at 111 North Front Street and other terminals near the Swing Bridge, with departures several times a day. Allow about 25–45 minutes to Caye Caulker and 75–90 minutes to San Pedro, plus tender time and the walk to the terminal. Check the schedule on the day: return tickets usually only work with the same company.

San Pedro, round trip$15-27.50

Private shuttle / car

Private shuttles cost about US$120 and rental cars about US$40–45 a day. Driving yourself to the ruins or caves only makes sense for confident drivers. Port-area parking is BZ$3 per hour.

Practical information

Currency
Belize dollar (BZ$), pegged at 2 BZ$ = 1 US$. Wikivoyage ferry fares are quoted at that rate.
US dollars
Widely accepted by tour operators and in the tourism village; ATMs there dispense both BZ$ and US$. Few vendors at the Baron Bliss Lighthouse Market take cards. Ask which currency a price is in.
Language
English is the official language (Kriol, Spanish and others are also spoken).
Time zone
UTC-6, no DST
Safety
US State Department: Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), issued 12 March 2026, with crime as the risk indicator, and a specific 'Reconsider travel to Southside Belize City'. Violent crime is concentrated south of Haulover Creek and is often gang-related; US government employees are discouraged from the south side between Haulover Creek Canal and Fabers Road. UK FCDO says tourists are not usually targeted but bystanders can be hurt, and warns of theft of cash, phones and cards. The tourism village and Fort George area are patrolled in daylight. Practical rules from guides: stay on the north side, use registered taxis with green plates, agree the fare first, do not walk the city after dark, and do not wear camouflage clothing.
Questions

Belize City cruise port FAQ

Is Belize City a tender port?

Yes. Ships anchor offshore because the water is too shallow to dock, and passengers take tenders to the Fort Street Tourism Village. Guides report 15 to 25 minutes on the water, and ships anchor between 2 and 5 miles out depending on the source. Ship-sponsored tours board first, so independent travellers should collect a tender ticket early.

Is Belize City safe for cruise passengers?

The tourism village and Fort George area are patrolled and considered safe in daylight, but Belize has high violent crime, concentrated on the Southside south of Haulover Creek. The US State Department rates Belize Level 2 and advises reconsidering travel to Southside Belize City. Stay on the north side, use registered taxis and avoid walking after dark.

How far is cave tubing from the Belize City cruise port?

Nohoch Che'en cave tubing is about 60–75 minutes by road from the port, then a roughly 20-minute jungle walk to the first cave. A full excursion takes about 5–6 hours including tender time. Cruise-line tours cost roughly US$145–175 and independent operators US$50–95.

Is Altun Ha worth it from Belize City?

Altun Ha is the easiest Maya ruin from the port, about 50 km and an hour's drive. Its Structure B-4 temple is 16 m tall and climbable, and the jade head was found there. The site is small, so it combines well with the zoo or Baboon Sanctuary. It is open daily 8:00 to 17:00.

Can I visit Caye Caulker or San Pedro on a cruise day?

Caye Caulker is realistic: water taxis take about 25 to 45 minutes depending on the source. San Pedro takes about 75 to 90 minutes each way, which leaves little time on land. Schedules are published as an image, so book with the ship or confirm return times and keep a large buffer before the last tender.

What is the difference between Belize City and Harvest Caye?

Belize City is a tender port in the north used by lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and MSC. Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line's private island in the far south, about 115 miles away, and only NCL passengers visit it. They are separate ports with different shore options.

Is a new cruise pier being built in Belize City?

Not yet. A new cruise port off Belize City is planned but not open. The former Stake Bank project went into receivership, and in April 2026 it was relaunched as Olo Caye, with construction due to finish in early 2028. For now ships still anchor and tender.

What currency do I need in Belize City?

The Belize dollar is pegged at 2 BZ$ to 1 US$, and US dollars are widely accepted by tour operators and shops in the tourism village. ATMs there dispense both currencies. Few vendors at the Baron Bliss Lighthouse Market take cards, so carry small bills and ask whether a quoted price is in BZ$ or US$.
