Port guide

Grand Cayman cruise port guide

Grand Cayman has no cruise pier. Ships anchor in George Town harbour and passengers are tendered ashore to the Royal Watler, North or South terminals along Harbour Drive, which sit within a few hundred feet of each other. The tender ride takes roughly 5 to 15 minutes, and the ship is assigned a terminal on the morning of arrival, so you return to the same one. From the terminals the shops, small museums and waterfront are walkable, and Seven Mile Beach is about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi. Most day plans fall into three groups: boat trips to Stingray City and the Sandbar in North Sound, beach time on Seven Mile Beach or at Smith Barcadere, and a drive west to Hell and the Cayman Turtle Centre, about 20 minutes each way. Starfish Point and Rum Point on the north coast are closer to an hour away, which makes them a stretch on a short call. Ship calls typically run from about 07:00-10:00 to 15:00-18:00. Because this is a tender port, rough water can stop tendering at George Town; in the past ships have then been moved to Spotts Dock on the south coast or have skipped the island. Leave a generous margin for the last tender back.

What Grand Cayman is good for

  • Wildlife & nature (53 tours)
Stingray City and the Sandbar, plus the Cayman Turtle Centre, are the signature stops. Boat tours often add a reef or Starfish Point.
  • Snorkeling (16 tours)
Shore options near town include Eden Rock, Devil's Grotto and Cheeseburger Reef. Cruise lines also run semi-submarine and catamaran snorkels, including the Kittiwake wreck.
  • Beaches
Seven Mile Beach, Royal Palms Beach Club and Smith Barcadere are 5-15 minutes from the terminals.
  • Culture & history (9 tours)
Pedro St. James, the National Museum and the George Town waterfront cover local history; Hell is a quick novelty stop.
  • Sightseeing (28 tours)
Port taxi island tours cost US$30 per person for 1.5-2 hours; longer tours add Hell, the Turtle Centre and east-end sights.

On your own or a cruise-line tour?

George Town is easy alone: the three terminals are close together, the town is walkable, and Seven Mile Beach, Smith Barcadere, Royal Palms and the shore snorkel spots at Eden Rock and Cheeseburger Reef can be done with a short taxi ride or a walk. Hell, the Turtle Centre and Pedro St. James are straightforward by port taxi or minibus, and the Port Authority lists fixed fares. The riskier choices are Stingray City and the north coast. Independent boats are common and cheaper, but you must be back at the tender with margin, and boats may cancel in rough seas. Starfish Point and Rum Point are about an hour each way and taxis do not wait there. A ship-run tour is worth it when you want a guaranteed return on a short call, when the day looks windy, or when many ships are in port and tenders may queue. If tendering is cancelled and the ship goes to Spotts, only cruise-line tours are reliably moved.

How people miss the ship here

  • Tender queues: the ship's own tenders and local tenders share a limited fleet, and Cayman officials said in December 2025 that the number of ships is limited by the number of tenders. Return to the terminal at least 60-90 minutes before all-aboard.
  • Weather: if swells make tendering unsafe, ships may move to Spotts Dock or skip the call, and tours or independent boat trips can be cancelled or rescheduled.
  • Time confusion: Cayman is on UTC-5 all year, so ship time may differ by an hour in summer. Check the clock your tour operator and ship use.
  • Long trips: Starfish Point and Rum Point are 45-60 minutes each way, and taxis do not wait at Rum Point; a late bus or missing taxi can cost the whole margin.
  • Independent boat tours: operators may not wait for late guests, and a delayed return from a distant marina can leave little time before the last tender.
  • Wrong-terminal mix-up: you must return to the terminal your ship's tenders use that day; it is assigned in the morning, so check the ship's notice.
Logistics

Where ships dock and getting around

Royal Watler Cruise Terminal

Tender landing 1-3 min to town Walkable to town

The largest and best-equipped of the three: duty-free shop, souvenir stalls, tour booths, tourist information stand, a snack bar, free Wi-Fi and an accessible restroom. Taxis queue on or near Harbour Drive.

Getting to town: Walk. The terminal is on Harbour Drive in the centre of George Town; the other two terminals are a short walk along the same waterfront.

Usually used by: All lines tender here; the terminal is assigned on the morning of arrival, with Royal Watler used first.

North Terminal

Tender landing 1-3 min to town Walkable to town

A small tender pier of about 180 ft with a fenced walkway and shaded benches. Customs for ships tendering to the South Terminal is cleared here. A tourist office is nearby.

Getting to town: Walk along Harbour Drive.

Usually used by: Used as the second or overflow landing on busy days; no line-specific assignment found.

South Terminal

Tender landing 1-3 min to town Walkable to town

A small tender pier of about 150 ft with a fenced walkway and a few benches. A tourist office is nearby.

Getting to town: Walk along Harbour Drive.

Usually used by: Used mainly on the busiest days when all three landings are needed; no line-specific assignment found.

Spotts Dock (bad-weather alternate)

Tender landing

A narrow pier used only as a back-up. Bad-weather calls can mean no organised transport and limited time in George Town; cruise-line tours are normally rerouted.

Getting to town: Used only when weather closes George Town. Ships anchor off the south coast and tender to a narrow pier; buses or taxis take passengers to town.

Usually used by: Any line, only when weather makes George Town unsafe for tendering; a few ships at most (two ships were at Spotts in October 2023).

Walking

The three terminals are within walking distance of each other and of central George Town (government buildings, small museums, shops; typically under 1 km). Seven Mile Beach is about 2.8 miles north, roughly an hour's walk along West Bay Road, so most people ride. Watch traffic when crossing Harbour Drive.

Port taxi (fixed fares from the terminal)

The Port Authority publishes one-way fares from the port, generally per person with a four-passenger minimum. Confirm the price with the dispatcher before you get in, and ask the dispatcher for destinations not on the list.

Port to Royal Palms Beach Club$5
Port to Public Beach (Seven Mile Beach)$6
Port to Turtle Farm or Hell$8
Port to Pedro St. James (shuttle drop-off)$8 per person
Island tour from the port, 1.5-2 hours$30 per person

Private taxi

Taxis are unmetered and priced by a government-regulated zone table; agree the fare and the currency (CI$ or US$) first. A private taxi from George Town to central Seven Mile Beach can cost US$27–35, more than the port's per-person fare, so compare both. Taxis don't wait at remote spots such as Rum Point, so arrange your return.

Downtown George Town to central Seven Mile Beach (per taxi) · 2025$27-35
Airport to Rum Point/East End (per taxi, proxy for the north-coast trip) · 2026$100-127

Public bus

Independent minibuses run from the downtown terminal near Edward Street. Cash only, and you can flag one down. They are cheap but slow, and getting back from remote places is unreliable.

George Town to West Bay (Hell, Turtle Centre area) · 2026$2.50 (CI$2)
George Town to Cayman Kai / Rum Point · 2026$10 (CI$8)

Rental car

Drive on the left. Rental offices are in George Town, one about a 10-minute walk from the terminals. You may need a local driving endorsement or international permit, so check with the rental company. The island's main road makes Hell, the Turtle Centre, Pedro St. James and the north coast doable, but allow for traffic and parking.

Standard rental car per day, plus fuel and insurance · 2026$45-70

Passenger ferry (Camana Bay to Rum Point/Kaibo)

A ferry between Camana Bay and Rum Point has operated on some weekdays in the past. Check that it is running before you plan around it, and note you need a taxi to Camana Bay first.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking August to October, and October is the wettest month (244 mm). Because George Town is tender-only, ordinary bad weather matters too: westerly swells can stop tendering, and ships are then moved to Spotts on the south coast or skip the island.

Time zone
UTC-5 (Eastern Standard Time, no daylight saving)
Ship time
Cayman stays on UTC-5 all year, so when US clocks are on daylight time (roughly March-November) a ship running on US Eastern time is one hour ahead of the island. Always confirm whether your tour operator and ship are using ship time or Cayman local time.
Safety
The US State Department rates the Cayman Islands Level 1 (Exercise normal precautions) and calls the islands generally safe. Carrying firearms or ammunition is illegal. Protected marine life such as starfish and stingrays must not be lifted out of the water.
Questions

Grand Cayman cruise port FAQ

Is Grand Cayman a tender port?

Yes. There is no cruise pier, so ships anchor in George Town harbour and tender passengers ashore. Sources put the ride at roughly 5-15 minutes. In April 2025 voters rejected a proposed cruise pier, so tendering is expected to continue, with officials planning more tender capacity from 2026.

Which terminal will my ship use?

George Town has three tender landings along Harbour Drive: Royal Watler, North and South. The terminal is assigned on the morning of arrival and you return to the same one. Royal Watler is the main terminal with duty-free shops, tour booths and Wi-Fi; the other two are small piers used when it is busy.

How far is Seven Mile Beach from the cruise terminal?

About 4.5 km (2.8 miles), roughly 10-15 minutes by taxi. Walking takes around an hour. The Port Authority lists a US$6 fare from the port to Public Beach and US$5 to Royal Palms Beach Club; Royal Palms entry is US$2 per person.

How much does Stingray City cost from a cruise ship?

Independent shared boats usually cost about US$40–80 per person for a sandbar-and-snorkel combination, and multi-stop half-day tours about US$50–100. Cruise-line excursions cost more but include the return guarantee. Allow 3–4 hours door to door.

Can I visit Hell and the Turtle Centre on my own?

Yes. Both are in West Bay, about 20 minutes from the port. The Port Authority lists US$8 port taxi fares to each. Hell is free and takes 15-45 minutes; the Turtle Centre charges US$47 adult and US$27 child and takes 2-3 hours. Public minibuses also run to West Bay for about US$2.50.

What happens if the weather is too rough to tender?

Ships may use Spotts Dock on the south coast, which has been used for a few ships in bad weather, or may skip the call. Spotts was used in October 2023 when westerly swells made George Town unsafe. Tours can be altered or cancelled, and independent trips may not be refundable, so check cancellation terms.

What currency do I need, and is the time different?

US dollars are generally accepted, but prices may be quoted in Cayman dollars (CI$1 = US$1.20). Cayman is on UTC-5 year-round, so a ship on US Eastern daylight time can be an hour ahead of the island in summer. Confirm which clock your tour and ship use.

Is Grand Cayman safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates the Cayman Islands Level 1, exercise normal precautions, and calls it generally safe (advisory dated May 2026). The main practical risks are sea conditions, traffic on the left side of the road, and limited medical services. Do not carry firearms or ammunition, and do not remove starfish or stingrays from the water.
